Types Of Ovarian Cysts: What Type Do You Suffer From?

Types of Ovarian Cysts – part II

In the part I of this article about types of ovarian cysts I mentioned functional types of ovarian cysts. There are still 4 other types to talk about, so let’s have a look at them.

Dermoid Cyst

The fact that Dermoid cysts are not as usual type of ovarian cyst doesn’t make them any more easy or convenient. For dermoid cyst mostly suffer young women and teenage girls. Dermoid cysts often cause a severe pain. Unfortunately very often is required surgical removal of ovarian cyst. Dermoid cyst may consist of various and bizarre stuff such as hair, teeth or skin. The reason of it is that the cells incorporated in the cyst are cells that produce ovarian eggs.

Cystadenoma Cyst

A Cystadenoma cyst arises from the cells covering outer part of the ovary. That is the reason why they are mostly attached straight away to the ovary, connecting the ovary with a stem. This reason is quite unfortunate in terms that therefore the cystadenoma cysts can grow really huge. Size of a football ball or a melon is not exception. The size determines them to be surgically removed. Mostly, these cysts are not cancerous. Within this type of cyst we can also find variations, especially in filling: they can be filled with water-like fluids or with a dense mucous liquid.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is based on imbalance of estrogen hormone produced by ovaries and can affect women at any time of their reproductive age. It is a syndrome that causes development of multiple ovarian cysts.

PCOS
PCOS

These are mostly small, benign (non cancerous) and placed on ovaries. PCOS is basically a failure of ovulation. That means none of the numbers of follicles that are produced during ovulation will grow big enough to release an ovarian egg. Clearly there is no chance to become pregnant in these cases. PCOS represents about 25% of all ovarian cyst problems and affects 5-10% of all female population! PCOS can cause irregularity of a menstrual cycle and temporary infertility.

As the PCOS is a complex problem, its treatment can also vary from case to case. Medicl treatment is often focused on lowering the level of insulin, restoration of regular menstrual cycle by prescribing synthetic hormonal treatment, or even treating acne separately or/and losing weight. None of these methods actually goes to the core of the problem which means that this condition treated only medically can become long term problem causing very inconvenient problems such as pain, infertility, acne or obesity.

Endometriosis

Although endometriosis is not a type of ovarian cyst, as a condition it is straight away connected with developing cysts. If you suffer from endometriosis, your chances of having an ovarian cyst of any kind are higher. Endometriosis itself appears when the inner lining of uterus called “endometrium” is being found in other parts of body. That happens mainly in or out of ovaries, fallopian tubes, inside of the uterus itself, it can spread over the whole pelvic area, including bowels, bladder or pelvic wall but can go as far as into your lungs or lining of the nose. Just like the ovarian cyst, endometriosis is painful and discomforting.
