Ovarian Cyst Treatment – Different Approaches in Treatment of Ovarian Cysts

As you might know already, ovarian cyst treatment is an often discussed topic and that should be no surprise. Ovarian cysts are a serious problem for a huge number of women. Knowing about a good ovarian cyst treatment will help you to not only overcome them, but also prevent their re-occurrence.

An ovarian cyst can appear during any stage of a woman’s reproductive life, the teenage years, the years when women are trying to conceive or during the menopause. To find out if you actually have an ovarian cyst, first check out list of symptoms of ovarian cysts – if you have them, visit your doctor to get confirmed the diagnoses. When an ovarian cyst has been detected, effective ovarian cyst treatment must be found, or otherwise a woman’s health can be in real trouble. So what do I mean by “effective treatment”?

The type of ovarian cyst treatment varies in according to the size and location of a cyst (or cysts – it is not unusual for cysts to appear in groups). Luckily, most of the ovarian cysts are benign, meaning they are not cancerous. Cancerous ovarian cysts represent only about 5-10% of all cysts. But still, you need to be sure so some kind of assessment is essential.

When you do some research, you’ll mostly find 3 main approaches for treating ovarian cysts:  medication, surgery, and a natural holistic approach. Let me tell you more about them.

Ovarian Cyst Treatment – Medication

The most common treatment and often the first stage is the ‘medication approach’. This usually starts with a supervising period, when the development of a cyst is being regularly monitored. In this phase doctors mostly recommend painkillers such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol, while watching the cyst development. But is this a long-term solution? Certainly not.

It can mean that you are going to continue your life afraid that the cyst might grow bigger and also that there might be a need for surgery, or even that you will end up infertile. In addition, painkillers might not continue to bring sufficient pain relief long-term while they are damaging your livers. And of course, the cyst is still there.

Huge negative of the ovarian cyst medical treatment is its side effects. The side effects of hormonal therapy is weight gain, at some cases weight loss, it lowers quality of your skin and dramatically affects your mood. Pain killers damage your livers. After a while your body gets used to a certain doze of pain killers and you will need more of them.

Ovarian Cyst Treatment – Surgery

When the cyst grows bigger, usually when it reaches a size of more than 6cm, doctors offer ovarian cyst surgery as the standard ovarian cyst treatment. Dependent on the location and size of the cyst, it can be removed by a keyhole surgical procedure called ‘laparoscopy’, which is the smallest of possible operations. You can watch ovarian cyst removal video here.

Another type of ovarian cyst removal is by caesarean. This procedure happens when the ovarian cyst is attached to the ovary or the fallopian tube in such a way that unfortunately they require to be removed altogether. If needed, a complete hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus which causes permanent sterility) might be done. This can happen when ovarian cysts are cancerous.

The above mentioned approaches to ovarian cyst treatment can be necessary at times, but they are expensive, and they can lower the chance of having a baby. They also do nothing to prevent ovarian cysts from coming back. So is there an alternative treatment for ovarian cysts?

Ovarian Cyst Treatment – Natural Holistic Approach

A holistic approach looks at ovarian cyst treatment differently. It takes into account all aspects of the female body functions, as well as age, diet, environmental and lifestyle factors, or very importantly, psychological aspects.

A huge benefit of a holistic approach is that it advises taking certain action during the phase when doctors recommend only supervising and taking painkillers. It is when you have the most power and control over the ovarian cyst yourself.

Other benefits of a holistic approach include no side-effects of medication, no long recovery after the surgery, respecting the physical, psychological and emotional state of a person and an emphasis on self-reliance when it comes to your health.
